Alajuela

This province, located north west of the city of
San José, is sunny and warm. The country's most
visited attraction, Arenal Volcano which erupts
almost every night, is just out of the mountains in
the northern plain of Alajuela. Another popular
volcano, Poás, is located just 25 miles from San
Jose.

The capital city of the province is also named
Alajuela, and became a city in 1824. The city of
Alajuela has to its north several quaint and growing
cities and towns. The artisan center of Sarchi is
home to Costa Rica's famous hand-painted oxcarts.
